Travel Tip |
Italian food is wonderful, but eating it can be a little complicated. Dinner will be late: most restaurants open between 7:30 and 9 pm, no earlier. Lunch is served between 1 and 4 pm, so don't expect shops and businesses to stay open during those hours - it's family time for most Italians.

Insider Tip: Off the beaten path jewel....Gubbio, UmbriaUmbria is north of Rome and southeast of Florence. Think of Tuscany without the tourists. If you're driving, don't be in such a rush and take some time in this area that's just filled with quaint, picturesque towns filled with medieval buildings. Sample truffles, shop for beautiful ceramics and eat pasta! Be advised, you won't find menus in English here! Try the porchetta, crunchy, moist and delicious. |
Italy Think you're an expert?
So you've been to Italy twice, 5 times, 10 times? And you've seen more than Rome, Florence and Venice? Even so, there's so much more. Consider another trip or three to see some of these spots. If you've seen them all, okay, you're an expert!
This is an easy one. The Roman Forum and the Colosseum in Rome.
Built in 80 AD it was used for spectacular shows and games, think gladiator fights. Nearby the Roman Forum was ancient Rome's crowning glory with temples, public spaces and basilicas.

Valley of the Temples in Sicily One of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Italy, located near Agrigento, is the ruined ancient city of Akragas and the well preserved Tempio della Concordia. It's remained largely intact since 430 BC.
Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Likely the most famous museum in Italy, it houses an unmatched collection of Italian Renaissance masterpieces in what was the offices of the Medici's.
Neopolitan Pizza. You can't walk down the street in Naples without passing loads of pizzerias. The sauce is wonderful, the mozzarella just made and the crust, chewy. Incredible, really.
The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel The Vatican Museums is the largest museum complex in the world with over 1400 rooms. The Pinacoteca Vaticana is probably Rome's best picture gallery filled with Renaissance works. (I recommend a guided tour to get the most out of your visit and to avoid missing something you'll regret later) For example, the Hall of Maps. Most of the Vatican tour itineraries end in the Sistine Chapel, undoubtedly one of the Vatican's finest works. St. Peter's Basilica is one of the largest churches in the world. Admission to it is free but you must be properly dressed. The Pope holds Wednesday General Audiences with the Holy Father at 10:30 but you must have a ticket (which is free) to attend. Go online for information on getting tickets.
Go for a drive in Umbria The roads that connect the hilltop towns of Umbria are breathtaking. The west of Umbria is one of the most beautiful and underrated regions of Italy, For art, history and culture, go there and take in the spectacular villages of Spoleto and Norcia where tourists are rare.
Cinque Terre Park your car and hike the coastal trail between these five pastel colored fishing villages along the Italian Riviera. Another option is to rent a boat from one of the harbors. Book your trip in spring or fall to avoid the crowds.
Pompeii. A city frozen in time, Pompeii is one of the most interesting archaeological sites in the world. Completely covered by lava in 79 AD after an eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, this is well worth a visit. To see what archaeologists have discovered here is located in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
St. Mark's Basilica Venice. Venice is tourist mecca because of its architectural style, bridges and canals. St. Mark's Cathedral is a treasure with its domes, marbles from the Middle East and amazing mosaics.
Praiano and Conca dei Marini. Okay, these are often overlooked Amalfi Coast towns. Located halfway between Amalfi and Positano, these towns are quieter and romantic because of their spectacular views extending from the Bay of Positano to the island of Capri. Great beaches, beautiful sunsets and sun from morning to night. If you are a hiker, check out the Sentiero deli Dei trail that starts in Praiano. Conca Dei Marini has only about 100 inhabitants that live in cottages along the cliffs. These cliffs form the legendary Grotta della Smeradlo or the Emerald Grotto - a partially submerged cave that gives off a beautiful green light. Either of these make a great honeymoon destination.
Cortino D'Ampezzo is known as the "Pearl of the Dolomites" and is part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage site. This resort town is a gem both summer and winter. IN winter, skiers enjoy miles of slopes at Dolomiti Superski. During summer its a haven for hikers and climbers and anyone who wants to enjoy breathtaking mountain scenery. |
